I was wearing my motivational speaker hat, getting ready to speak to a group of teachers. And while I was doing that - I was musing to myself. You know, making one of those nonverbal sounds as I looked at the table the hotel audio/visual guy had brought me.  I was thinking, "that's just about the perfect size for my props."

As a motivational speaker, I travel a LOT and I still have a vivid memory of an intriguing experience I had several years ago at the DCA airport.  I picked a rental car from the National Car Rental lot and pulled up to the checkout kiosk.  And when the young man turned around to take my information, something REALLY interesting happened.  Now, before I tell you want happened, I need you to know that I was in what I call, a “neutral” emotional state.  I wasn’t particularly happy, certainly not sad – just kind of neutral.

As a motivational speaker I focus a lot on how to create healthy, strong, mutually satisfying relationships. And one of my most favorite sources of information is the work of Dr. John Gottman. Since the 1980's, John Gottman, a psychologist at the University of Washington has brought together over 3,000 couples to study their interactions and, based on how they communicate with each other, determine whether or not they will still be married fifteen years later. His accuracy rate, if he watches them interact for one hour, is a whopping 95%!

We all know that laughter lowers blood pressure, boosts the immune system and that there is a decrease in stress hormomes (cortisol, adrenaline and dopac) - and an increase in beta-endorphines (which lowers feelings of depression.) And yes, laughter burns calories, feels good and makes us more attractive.

How to Turn a Difficult, Idiot Patient Into Your Greatest Raving Fan

“Stand here, bite down on the mouth piece and take a step forward,” the dental assistant said as she put me in the zippy 3D panoramic x-ray machine.  It was clear she wasn’t thrilled to be doing this since I was being seen on an emergency basis right at closing time and this was making her stay late.  I did as she asked.

I’m a high maintenance dental patient. That’s right - a motivational speaker who is a high maintenance dental patient. It’s almost an oxymoron. But it’s true. I just think about going to the dentist and my left eye starts twitching. And what makes this really fascinating is that I am also the (self-proclaimed) World’s Most Experienced Dental Patient. Name a procedure and I’ve probably had it done - more than once. So you’d think I’d be over it by now. Yeah, right. I’m not.

As a motivational speaker one of my areas of focus is on how to build strong, healthy, mutually beneficial relationships. As we all know, the quality of our lives is in direct proportion to the quality of our relationships. We also know that one of the best ways to strengthen our relationships is for both people to honestly endeavor to meet the other person’s needs. So what do people need?
